Day 3--Leaders of the Day: Luis, Tauryn & Zoe

Day 3:

What a day of hard work and exploration! We started off the day with a community building activity where we all shared our ideas about norms, expectations and hopes. We then headed to St. Jude’s school to start our first day of work. After being assigned to 4 different jobs; plastering, painting, laying gravel, and creating metal covers.  As we started to work the children came out to help us and cheer us on. They even had a hard time going into the classroom after break. We worked through powerful rain showers, mixing concrete and laying foundations for the wall. After the day’s work was done we played with the kids before saying goodbye. We even had to chase them around for our work gloves!

We cleaned off a hard day’s sweat. We then got to enjoy a DELICIOUS lunch! After lunch we had some free time to rest, play cards and go for walks. After our break we met in the cafeteria and we headed to the Mayan museum, about a five-minute walk from the lodge. At the museum, we learned about Mayan history and culture. People danced traditionally, squeezed sugar cane using an old machine, learned how to cook tortillas, and learned about their cooking methods. We came back to an activity, where we split into four groups to find landmarks to help us make a map.  Kids created bonds with the locals as they played soccer, chatted and laughed together. We came back to a break and a delicious dinner, afterward we participated in some activities. We learned about our night vision and learned what light does to our eyes. We then learned how to find spiders, we also got to view a huge tarantula. Some kids were put into their learning zone, and there were some moments where some jumped to their panic zone.

Overall it was a successful day, we learned new things and widened our horizons!

 Sincerely,

Your Leaders Of the Day; Zoe, Luis and Tauryn
